We’re looking for an experienced Pricing Actuary to help Bupa by supporting the delivery of Bupa’s strategic and commercial goals and ensuring good outcomes for customers through the development of pricing strategies and tactical recommendations for Bupa’s UK consumer PMI portfolio.
Here you’ll be managing a team of talented actuarial analysts who support this work using and maintaining sophisticated pricing models to produce deep insight and impactful recommendations.
Responsibilities and activities will vary depending on evolving business strategy and priorities but will include leading on the following types of tasks with the support of your team of pricing analysts:
- Develop pricing strategies and make recommendations to the business via appropriate governance committees to ensure the delivery of the business strategy
- Being the primary contact to key business stakeholders, understanding their requirements, and ensuring their engagement and buy-in for all recommended changes
- Developing and maintaining generalised linear models, GBMs and other machine learning models used for pricing and to provide insight into customer decision-making (e.g. conversion and renewal)
- Applying a portfolio management approach, scenario testing and price optimisation, including management dashboards
- Carrying out pricing fairness reviews as envisaged in the Pricing Fairness Framework
- Evaluating the impact of new regulatory developments and making recommendations in terms of a pricing and underwriting response
- Pricing of new and existing PMI and other insurance products
- Facilitating and interpreting competitor pricing analysis
- Working with the actuarial and clinical claims analytics teams to develop claims inflation assumptions, and work with commercial finance teams to understand expenses
- Supporting projects across multiple functional areas as a pricing subject matter expert, applying advanced analytical methods to develop business solutions to challenges and opportunities that arise
- Identifying and driving continuous improvement and efficient ways of working
- Provide leadership for own team and wider pricing team, in line with Bupa leadership competencies and values including coaching and development to build a high performing and engaged team
- Responsible for identification of key talent and taking steps to develop potential successors
Key Skills / Qualifications needed for this role:
The role holder is expected to have the following experience and qualification/s (experience requirements may be relaxed for strong candidates):
- Qualified Actuary (IFoA or equivalent) with relevant post-qualification experience
- UK PMI or general insurance pricing experience
- Experience in pricing using statistical modelling including Generalised Linear Models and other machine learning methods (experience in developing and deploying novel approaches to pricing would be an advantage)
- Lifetime value or embedded value modelling
- Experience with relevant analytical tools such as Snowflake/SQL, Emblem, Radar, Python and Power BI
- Proven track record of applying analytics and data modelling to business situations in order to provide strategic recommendations
- A proactive, innovative mindset; constructive challenge; seeing things from a customer's viewpoint; and exploring new directions prompted by data-driven insight
- Strong commercial skills. Identifies and understands risks, opportunities and impacts on customers and the business, and is able to develop and deliver effective solutions.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, explaining complex issues clearly and concisely, presenting compelling arguments / proposals using fact based evidence and research, adapting style for maximum impact with audiences.
- Builds effective relationships with stakeholders, able to challenge constructively and resolve conflict / issues productively.
- Change agent – takes the team on a journey through involvement, communication and leading from the front.
