This unique role offers a range of responsibilities and provides the opportunity to engage and partner with actuarial colleagues, IT, Operations, the Data Office, and Chief Underwriting Officers.We are looking for an individual who is internally motivated, intellectually curious, can manage multiple priorities, and is driven to enhance existing processes.<ul><li>Implement complicated actuarial models on the Python-based hyperexponential (hx) Rating Platform.</li><li>Standardize hx architecture patterns and enhance common modules to ease the rater build process.</li><li>Establish training and upskilling of product actuaries to scale up the rater delivery model.</li><li>Support Product Actuaries in developing, building, and enhancing pricing tools used across the North America commercial platform.</li><li>Take ownership of projects utilizing Agile planning approaches, apply rigorous coding standards in reviewing the work of others, and manage junior resources.</li><li>Work closely with the Product Actuaries, Modelers, Underwriters, Business Leads, and Chief Underwriting Officers to implement efficiencies to pricing tools and raters.</li><li>Assist in developing segment-specific algorithm design, actuarial code review, testing, and test reporting.</li><li>Supervise and train junior staff.</li></ul>What you'll need to succeed<ul><li>BS in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related area.</li><li>7 years or more in commercial and/or financial lines pricing preferred.</li><li>At least five years of relevant experience, particularly in the development and maintenance of Python-based systems.</li><li>Expert in coding in Python – understanding of advanced coding techniques (abstraction, design patterns, unit testing) and CI/CD tooling and processes to ensure high-quality results.</li><li>Used to working in development teams and familiar with their practices.</li><li>Proficiency with Git and GitHub as part of a collaborative development workflow, including pull requests, conflict resolution, code review workflows, and branch management.</li><li>Experience with testing frameworks (pytest, unittest).</li><li>Experience in Technical Delivery using Agile methodology.</li><li>Familiarity transforming and analyzing structured, semi-structured, and unstructured (JSON) data.</li><li>Expertise in Excel, SQL, VBA, JavaScript, or other programming languages will be useful.</li><li>Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.</li><li>Work well both independently and as part of a team.</li><li>Able to lead projects independently.</li><li>Strong business and collaboration skills, and responsive to service needs and operational demands.</li><li>Effective time management skills.</li><li>Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.</li><li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.</li><li>Customer focused.</li></ul>Ready to set new industry standards? The Actuary will be responsible for working closely with Underwriting to implement strategic rate changes that support growth while achieving profitability goals.They will present proposed rate changes to senior Underwriters and then work closely with IT to implement the rate changes. They will be heavily involved in the planning process as well as monitoring actual results versus expectations. It will be vital to develop a strong working relationship to build the trust of Underwriting.They will also partner with claims staff to understand changes in claims handling and trends in the judicial environment.What you need to know:<ul><li>Support the Commercial Contract Bind Underwriting Team which writes small commercial property, liability, garage, and excess.</li><li>Produce profitability studies and effectively communicate results to Underwriting.</li><li>Work closely with underwriting to develop pricing and underwriting strategies and identify pockets of profitable growth opportunities.</li><li>Work closely with programming to implement rate changes.</li><li>Continue to build out monitoring reports that provide Underwriting with an understanding of the book of business.</li><li>Support finance and Underwriting during the annual planning process.</li><li>Estimate, review, and evaluate the monthly Actual versus expected at a pricing segment level.</li><li>Monitor loss trends, relevant industry, and regulatory changes and effectively communicate to management impacts on business.</li><li>Review underwriting actions impacting loss ratios to assess impact on current and future performance and collaborate with underwriting to identify future underwriting actions.</li><li>Train junior staff.</li></ul>What we’re looking for:<ul><li>BS in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related area.</li><li>ACAS or FCAS.</li><li>7 years or more experience, pricing experience preferred.</li><li>Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.</li><li>Work well both independently and as part of a team.</li><li>Proficiency in Excel, SQL, Python, R, or other programming languages preferred.</li><li>Strong business and collaboration skills and responsive to service needs and operational demands.</li><li>Effective time management skills.</li><li>Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.</li><li>Customer focus.</li></ul>For positions based in New Jersey, the base salary range is $83,000 - $148,000.
