General description of role:
Aon is expanding its Automation and Power Platform capability to support the growing demand for digital workflow, analytics, and process optimization across the UK Retirement business.
We are seeking an accomplished Power Platform Developer who combines strong technical depth with a passion for enabling and upskilling others through coaching, standards, and hands-on support.
In this role, you will help junior developers deliver modern, scalable, secure solutions using Microsoft Power Platform tools – including Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power BI.
You will provide day-to-day mentorship on solution development, fixing issues, testing, documentation, and adherence to governance and ALM standards.
This high-impact role suits someone passionate about strengthening delivery capability across the team.
It supports operational challenges using reusable patterns, clear mentorship, and confident ways to address critical issues.
The role includes partnering with collaborators to develop Aon's automation roadmap and ways of working.
Job responsibilities:
- Solution Design & Development:
- Support junior developers as they build solutions using Power Apps (Canvas and advanced types) and Power Automate.
- Help compose solution approaches, pair-program when necessary, and provide timely unblock/support.
- Support development of workflows, data models, integrations, and components – reviewing approaches, helping troubleshoot issues, and promoting repeatable patterns that reduce manual intervention.
- Provide mentorship and quality review for dashboards and analytics using Power BI, including data modeling, DAX, and visualization practices.
- Ensure solutions follow Aon’s governance, architecture, environment strategy, and ALM standards – developing guidance, checklists, and examples that help juniors apply them consistently.
- Business Engagement & Analysis:
- Partner with UK Retirement specialists to understand processes, pain points, and improvement opportunities.
- Help juniors interpret these into practical build tasks.
- Support translation of business requirements into functional and technical specifications, ensuring juniors have clarity on scope, data, acceptance criteria, and delivery approach.
- Promote best practices by sharing patterns, running show-and-tells, and constructively challenging existing processes with automation-driven alternatives.
- Quality, Testing & Documentation:
- Define and coach testing approaches (unit, functional, regression) and support troubleshooting to improve reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Develop and maintain clear documentation standards (technical build, data flows, release notes) and produce user/junior guidance that supports consistent delivery.
- Own and evolve reusable frameworks, templates, and best-practice design patterns (e.g., app structure, naming standards, error handling, logging, security approach).
- Support, Enhancement & Collaboration:
- Provide senior-level support for existing Power Platform solutions – triaging incidents, diagnosing root cause, and guiding juniors through fixes and preventative improvements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., Data Solutions Team, Risk & Modelling, Specialist Teams) to align on data, controls, and support processes, and to unblock junior delivery.
- Mentor junior developers (India-based and UK-based) through structured coaching, onboarding support, code/design reviews, and troubleshooting clinics.
- Contribute to learning and development of the wider team by creating how-to guides, standards, example solutions, and running knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Contribute insights that help shape the Power Platform roadmap and governance model, using themes from support/troubleshooting and junior feedback to drive improvements.
Skills/competencies required:
Your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
Essential Skills & Experience:
- 5+ years in application development, with good experience in Microsoft Power Platform, including a track record of supporting and guiding other developers (mentoring, reviews, troubleshooting).
- Strong capability across Power Apps (Canvas & Model-Driven), Power Automate, and Power BI – able to advise on solution design, review builds, and help resolve complex issues.
- Strong understanding of data structures, relational models, and integration using Dataverse, SharePoint, APIs, or Azure services, with the ability to guide juniors toward secure, supportable designs.
- Demonstrable business process understanding, ideally within large, multi-team environments, and the ability to convert that understanding into practical guidance for less experienced developers.
- Ability to engage stakeholders, clarify requirements, and enable team delivery through planning support, reviews, risk management, and pragmatic technical decision-making.
- Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and create usable documentation.
- Ideally, experience working in Agile or iterative environments and helping others adopt effective delivery practices.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience using ALM, Azure DevOps or Git for CI/CD of Power Platform solutions, including establishing repeatable release processes and supporting others to use them.
- Knowledge of PowerFX, JavaScript or .NET for advanced customization.
- Exposure to automation in financial services, consulting or operational teams.
- Capability to perform light data engineering (Power Query, SQL, DAX).
- Understanding of automation governance and environment strategy.
