About the Team

The International Portfolio Analytics (IPA) team is a dynamic, multi-functional group that operates with creativity, autonomy, and empowerment. Embedded within the underwriting business and represented in senior leadership forums, the team supports all divisions of Markel International. Our core focus spans four critical areas:

  • Portfolio Management

  • Advanced Analytics
  • Catastrophe & Exposure Management

What You’ll Do

Explore opportunities to deliver smarter pricing solutions, including:

  • Reviewing, challenging, and improving pricing models and approaches to iterative development and calibration.
  • Offering practical recommendations and sharing best practices, balancing technical rigour with real-world application.
  • Supporting the ongoing development and maturity of models, including exploring opportunities with internal and external data sources.
  • Adding value to testing, validation, and governance processes to embed effective practices.

  • Lead initiatives to improve pricing model governance and calibration.
  • Document and validate pricing methodologies and ensure clarity across teams.
  • Facilitate workshops and meetings to drive collaboration and decision-making.
  • Prepare governance materials and secure sign-off at key milestones.
  • Support continuous improvement across the International Portfolio Analytics function.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in pricing model development, review, calibration, validation, and governance; familiarity with GLMs is helpful but not essential.
  • Strong technical actuarial skills with the ability to problem-solve and recommend analytics approaches.
  • Background in actuarial work—whether from London Market insurance, Personal Lines, Consulting, or elsewhere.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and constructively, and to challenge approaches in a supportive way.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt, with an open mind to new tools, data sources, and ways of working.
  • Collaborative spirit and a desire to help others develop and succeed.
  • Good coding or data analysis skills (e.g., Python, SQL, Power BI) would be useful, but we’re happy to support your development.
  • Any experience with capital modelling is a plus but not required.

Why Join Us?

  • A collaborative, forward-thinking team that values creativity, autonomy, and fresh perspectives.
  • Opportunities to influence strategic pricing decisions and shape best practice across Markel International.
  • Access to cutting-edge tools, data, and analytics to drive meaningful change.
  • Support for your professional growth, including mentoring and development in technical and leadership skills.
  • Flexible working options to help you balance work and life while making a real impact.
