2026 Summer Intern

Location:

This internship role is scheduled to be flexible. Please be prepared to spend part of your time working remotely and part of your time working at the following address: 4460 Hacienda Dr., Bldg. A, Pleasanton, 94588.

Department Description:

Underwriting performs risk analysis of employer groups using demographic data and medical claims to calculate employee/member rates. This includes collaboration and support of Sales/Account Management partners to explain risk and rating decisions with market-facing rationale, group and macro reporting, and internal processing of groups to establish the correct billing rates and medical benefits.

Intern Projects:

The intern will learn basic underwriting concepts and internal processing that supports underwriters, such as census demographic calculations, initial renewal setup and reporting, and internal processing of groups in certain segments. There will also be special projects focused on underwriting efficiency or marketing effectiveness when data needs to be compiled for analysis. The intern will have opportunities to observe underwriting meetings and case review meetings to gain a thorough understanding of the underwriting function.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to a designated project or initiative to meet a KP business objective.

  • Learning new applications needed to complete assignments or support the execution of business objectives.
  • Job shadowing in other functional areas.
  • Performing additional duties as required.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience:

  • N/A

Education:

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree or have graduated from an accredited university within the last year.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration:

  • N/A

Additional Requirements:

  • Aptitude to perform data and process analytics and formulate solutions.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.0 GPA or above.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and produce high-quality work in short periods of time.
