The primary purpose of this Senior Actuarial Analyst position is to provide a range of decisions based on actuarial analysis and forecasting, to maximize profit and growth. This includes developing complex actuarial formulations leading to the recommendation of extensive and impactful pricing strategies and loss reserving.

Provide consultations and clarification on actuarial models and risk issues, and influence management towards a course of action that has a potential impact on underwriting, pricing, risk management, and profitability. This may include participation in a rotational program within the Actuarial department.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conducting research and analysis on potential new lines of business and establishing rates/pricing that supports Markel’s initiative of continued profitable premium growth along with cost-based pricing.
  • Communicating results with actuaries, Finance, Claims, Underwriting, and Executive Leadership in a clear and concise manner.
  • Responding efficiently and accurately to requests to vary the actuarial analysis in terms of structure and/or assumptions.
  • Presenting results of actuarial analyses to meeting attendees, ensuring that both actuarial and non-actuarial attendees have a clear understanding of final results.
  • Forecasting reserve estimates on a quarterly basis.
  • Conducting periodic pricing studies.
  • Utilizing predictive analytics to identify the most and least profitable insureds within a portfolio.
  • Monitoring rate changes.
  • Developing action monitors to track progress toward stated goals to improve profitability.
  • Handling ad hoc requests from product line leaders and executive leadership.
  • Communicating potential actuarial issues promptly.
  • Performing other actuarial work as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree preferably in mathematics, statistics, or other analytical fields.

Certification

  • 2+ Actuarial exams passed, with a demonstrated commitment to pursuing Associate or Fellowship designation in the Casualty Actuarial Society.

Work Experience/Skill Set

  • Minimum of 2 years of actuarial or data analytics experience preferred.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent analytical ability.
  • Strong technical skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
