The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced actuarial analyses based upon generally accepted actuarial principles. You will provide direction and oversight of more junior level actuaries. The completed analyses will be used by internal business leaders for data-based decision making. These analyses may relate to various areas of actuarial expertise, including Pricing, Reserving, Reinsurance, Corporate Reporting, or combinations of these areas. At this level, solid communication skills are essential. Large account pricing and/or research and development experience preferred.
Job Responsibilities
- Forecasting reserve estimates on a quarterly basis
- Communicating quarterly results to Finance, Claims, Underwriting, and executive leadership
- Periodic pricing studies
- Utilizing predictive analytics to identify most and least profitable insureds within a portfolio
- Developing action monitors to track progress toward stated goals to improve profitability
- Researching new business opportunities and identifying potential acquisitions
- Ad hoc requests from product line leaders and executive leadership
- Providing guidance to non-actuaries on actuarial principles and concepts
- Representing the Department on cross-functional teams
- Preparing and presenting material explaining actuarial concepts and findings
- Supporting corporate goals and principles, and communicating those to more junior staff
Education
- Bachelor's Degree preferably in mathematics, statistics, or other analytical fields
Certification
- ACAS required
Work Experience/Skill Set
- 4+ years of actuarial experience
- Project management skills are required, especially related to leading cross-functional teams, abiding by deadlines, management of resources, and meeting customer needs
- Strong communication skills are required, as is the ability to think critically and to defend actuarial assumptions, decisions, and methodologies
- Ability to balance creativity and sound actuarial judgement
- Experience with both pricing and reserving preferred

Pay information:
Job level, title, and base salary offered to the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience, specialized skills relevant to the role, and possession of the outlined preferred qualifications. Markel reserves the right to propose an alternative career level based on these factors. The national average salary for the Actuary position is $116,080 - $159,610 with 25% bonus potential.
