Actuarial Data Engineer

Purpose:

Through the development and maintenance of data, systems, and tools, enable the evaluation of risk and profitability by the Actuarial Services department. The candidate should be an individual who works in the actuarial field and has a high interest / experience in data management & application development.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Direct strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation and coordination of the information and technology systems for the department and division, where applicable.
  • Lead projects that support the analysis, evaluation and modeling of potential solutions using actuarial methods and processes that enable meeting the financial profitability and/or production goals of the company. Work with management and corporate areas to understand and incorporate strategic direction.
  • Direct the prioritization of multiple activities for functional area. Lead and manage projects requiring multiple resources which are not direct reports. Balance sometimes conflicting goals.
  • Lead in the development of and delivery of value-added services to clients/company, integrating information from other areas into the actuarial system based databases and models.
  • Direct the development, maintenance, and enhancement of actuarial analyses as well as ad hoc work products into system-based solutions. Translate complex actuarial models into system designs and specifications.
  • Direct the evaluation, selection, implementation and maintenance of the division's internal information systems by supporting the evaluation of alternatives and performing appropriate cost benefit analysis.
  • Interact with internal and external contacts to improve quality and knowledge of work product.
  • Direct and lead the architecture/design and building of new automated solutions and procedures for the department and division.
  • Participate in various activities, client visits or audits as needed. Act as liaison on information technology discussions as appropriate for the functional area. Maintain current knowledge of trends and products in the system technology industries and address the need for development of new methods, products and procedures.
  • Provide leadership in the training of actuaries and other relevant areas regarding new and enhanced system solutions and system options, including advanced excel training specific to daily tasks.
  • Lead in the creation of and ensure adherence to standards of documentation, quality control, data governance, and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology, including design, peer, and code review as well as ICS and IDP policies/controls. May lead in testing of internal controls for other units within the department.
  • Be a steward of data quality at AMIG; identify issues and areas for improvement. Take known issues to Data Governance and represent the department in efforts to correct data issues and promote data quality for the broader organization.
  • Lead in the creation of data sets to be used by analysts that combine multiple complex data sources into a format that is suitable for analysis
  • Lead in the exploration of alternative internal and external data sources

Required Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of actuarial techniques, property/casualty (re)insurance, accounting and finance
  • Strong/In-depth knowledge of systems and data structures, with applicability towards insurance operations, such as Databricks, Azure Data Lake Service, SQL Server Databases, and Azure Data Factory
  • Expert working knowledge of analytical tools including Python, R, MS Excel and Access, VBA, TM1, Cognos, SAS, R, Power BI
  • Some experience of user interface coding such as JavaScript
  • Strong project management skills and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of SQL
  • In depth analytical and mathematical skills
  • Strong knowledge of industry source of information

Additional Details:

Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical people. Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics or related field, graduate degree preferred.
  • 4+ years of technical experience and 2+ years of experience working with Actuaries required.
  • Passed at least 2 exams for CAS/SOA designation.
