Legal & General is hiring an
Actuarial Technical Services Manager (Defined Benefit)
Company Description
Legal & General (L&G) is a leading UK financial services group and major global investor. We’ve been safeguarding people’s financial futures since 1836 and strive to build a better society while improving the lives of our customers and creating value for shareholders.
We are one of the world’s largest asset managers and provide powerful asset origination capabilities. Together, these underpin our retirement and protection solutions. We are an international player in pension risk transfer, UK and US life insurance, and UK workplace pensions and retirement income.
L&G Institutional Retirement looks after around 700,000 institutional customers who have their retirement benefits secured with us. Operating continuously in the UK market since 1987, we are the UK’s longest-running insurer.
Our Institutional Retirement division provides pension risk transfer (PRT) solutions for UK and US defined benefit (DB) schemes and reinsurance solutions from our global hub in Bermuda. We work with companies, DB pension schemes, and their advisors to help them secure and protect scheme members’ retirement benefits.
Joining us means you’ll support customers’ financial security in retirement, help companies settle their pension liabilities, and enable investment for the long term to back our pension promises.
Job Description
We’re currently recruiting for a Technical Services Manager to join our multi-award winning Pension Risk Transfer (PRT) business. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our PRT systems.
In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring that the systems and processes used within our PRT business remain optimal. You will work on continually improving these systems so that we can continue to provide our customers with great outcomes and retain our position as a market leader in this sector.
If you have a passion for technical excellence and a collaborative approach, we would love to hear from you.
This is a hybrid working opportunity, allowing you to split your week between working from home and coming into the office, promoting a work-life balance that suits you.
While this role can be based from any of our Flagship UK Offices (London, Hove, or Glasgow), there will be occasional travel to other offices required, typically once or twice per month. However, these trips will be pre-planned, and we will be as flexible as we can with these requirements.
Please note that while this role has been advertised as Full Time, we are open to and supportive of more flexible working patterns if required.
What you'll be doing:
- Providing actuarial and technical support to manage calculation changes to the DB onboarding systems and claims calculators.
- Leading the planning, design, and delivery of actuarial and calculation changes for these systems.
- Mapping existing processes for improvement and presenting alternatives.
- Writing technical actuarial specifications for new systems.
- Maintaining and developing test/regression packs for system releases and improvements.
- Providing PRT scheme, actuarial, calculation, and data expertise to various teams.
- Analysing feedback to ensure customer expectations of performance and service are met.
- Training and supporting the wider PRT teams to aid with their development.
Qualifications
Who we're looking for:
- In-depth understanding of Defined Benefit Pension Schemes.
- Qualified or Part Qualified Actuary preferred, with demonstrable experience/knowledge of Defined Benefit Pensions being essential.
- Strong experience in technical system/process development.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Proven ability to build effective working relationships in complex and technical environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to filter technical information to a non-technical audience and vice versa.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence a broad range of individuals.
- Programming experience is valued but not essential.
Whatever your role, we reward performance and behaviour with a package that looks after all the things that are important to you. Here are some of the benefits we offer:
- The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance-related bonus plan and valuable share schemes.
- Generous pension contribution.
- Life assurance.
- Healthcare Plan.
- 27 days holiday, plus public holidays, with the option to buy and sell holiday.
- Competitive family leave.
- Participate in our electric car scheme, which offers employees the option to hire a brand-new electric car through tax-efficient salary sacrifice.
- Many discounts for our own products and at a range of high street stores and online.
- Our redesigned workspaces are great spaces to connect and collaborate with wellbeing at the heart.
Additional Information

Guided by leaders with integrity who care about your future and wellbeing, you will be empowered through initiatives that support people to develop their careers and excel.
We care passionately about outcomes rather than attendance and are therefore open to discussing all kinds of flexible working options including part-time, term-time, and job shares. Although some roles have limited flexibility due to customer demand, we accommodate requests when we can.
