Actuarial Valuation Analyst

Description

As an Actuarial Analyst, you will have the opportunity to enhance your core skills and your retirement plan knowledge by working on different retirement plans. You will prepare large complex client data, address questions, resolve data and plan issues, and prepare client deliverables.

Over time, you will get opportunities to serve as a project manager on more complex assignments, lead internal meetings, and mentor junior staff.

Excellence

  • Prepare valuations of pension plans and retiree welfare plans for consulting offices.
  • Respond to queries from consultants for plan provisions and valuation results and resolve or escalate any problems or issues.
  • Complete work following accounting standards and government regulations applicable to the plan.
  • Utilize detailed tasks and steps to produce quality projects.
  • Complete analysis and reconciliations of plan participant data.
  • Reconcile plan assets.
  • Manage the timeline for some small projects or components of larger projects.
  • Perform technical reviews of standard and complex projects.
  • Identify and communicate technical and analytical issues to project teams.
  • Supervise new hires and less-experienced associates on a project basis.
  • Allocate and coordinate work among project hires, interns, and new associates.
  • Actively participate in team and project planning and suggest improvements based on observed best practices.
  • Serve as a primary doer and liaise effectively with consultants and actuaries regarding data collection and project execution required for global accounting consolidation projects.
  • Prepare the first draft of deliverables for review by the consultant per project deadlines.

People

  • Build relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrate natural ease and effectiveness when dealing with associates in other offices.
  • Provide ongoing on-the-job training to project hires, interns, and junior associates on routine projects, including basic tools, issues, and concepts.
  • Mentor and manage junior associates regarding budgets, timelines, and excellence standards.
  • Act as feedback provider on performance reviews of junior associates and new associates for regularization.

Clients

  • Work with the Project Leader to ensure that each project is completed on time and meets quality standards.
  • Respond to all requests and communications effectively and efficiently.
  • Identify and lead communication with the consulting team on project results, providing analysis of results and potential issues, and responding to inquiries.

Financial

  • Meet chargeable hours targets.
  • Contribute to profitability by preparing project budgets, monitoring time spent on the project, and maintaining accurate time records.
  • Ensure projects are consistently correct, on time, and within budget. Notify the project manager of potential write-offs and identify the need to modify the scope of a project to address unanticipated issues.
  • Increase efficiency within teams by identifying ways to improve processes.
  • Allocate and coordinate work among project hires, interns, and new associates.
  • Actively participate in team and project planning and suggest improvements based on observed best practices.

Qualifications

The Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in a program with a heavy emphasis on mathematics, statistics, or engineering.
  • Fresh Graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Or those with at least 2 years of work experience in a Senior Actuarial role.
  • Proven mathematical aptitude.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Previous defined benefit pension experience required.
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented with effective time management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and integrative skills including the ability to draw conclusions and identify trends from data in a logical, systemic way.
  • Ability to ask the right questions and seek help where appropriate, good problem-solving skills.
  • Strong client service orientation.
  • Ability to apply newly acquired knowledge to future assignments.
  • Ability to work both independently and on client teams.
  • Sense of accountability and ability to display initiative in self-development.
  • Actuarial exams or designation is a plus.
