Actuarial Data Analyst

We are looking for an individual who will support the data infrastructure that allows the team to perform vital actuarial functions within the Reserving team.

The Actuarial Team of 29 provides actuarial support to MINT in the following areas: pricing, business planning, reserving, commutations, capital model parameterisation, and regulatory reporting. Markel rely heavily on actuarial input in all aspects of the financial management of the business.

The team is structured into 5 sub-teams, with oversight provided by the Chief Actuary. These are:

  • 3 divisional teams of 4 people each, working on pricing, reserving, business planning and capital model parameterisation for their allocated underwriting divisions
  • A central pricing team of 4, providing oversight of all pricing activity, as well as leading all aspects of regulatory tasks linked to pricing (e.g. PMDR, Actuarial Function reports of reinsurance/underwriting)
  • A central reserving team of 10, including data and modelling team members, providing reserving activity, as well as many regulatory and accounting tasks that are linked to reserving
  • 2 interns, and a team secretary

The mission of the Actuarial department is to assist MINT in achieving consistent underwriting profit and financial results by providing a high-quality actuarial service.

This individual will support actuarial processes, automating them as far as possible to allow more time for valuable analysis by the team.

The focus of the role is three-fold:

  • MS SQL Server Management Studio database support for our two resident guides (BAU), which could mean building new stored procedures or troubleshooting existing procedures, as well as running queries as part of BAU;
  • Power BI integration as our new reporting software of choice;
  • Support for other projects, which may involve learning basic level Python, Alteryx

This may include improving existing reports, building new ones and mentoring other resource to also develop our models.

The other significant projects we anticipate the successful candidate tackling (in descending order of importance):

  • Solvency II Technical Provisions calculation and reporting modifications
  • Power BI reserving pack automation (this may involve Python but could have an alternative solution)
  • Optimisation of the “Overs & Unders” (GAAP) process, which is likely to involve the use of Alteryx
  • Improvements to our Lloyd's Brussels and Trust Fund reporting from our central reserving model
  • Support for the integration of new policy administrations systems data into the actuarial process for triangulation production and reporting
  • Reserving model reporting updates. This will include improved Annual Actual versus encouraged reporting, improved analysis tool speed, enhanced legal entity reporting, benchmark data integration, sub-class analysis and reporting improvements
  • Repatriation of triangulation production to a central controlled IT tool with explanation, documentation and parallel test support

Our must-haves:

  • Be a graduate, having completed a numerical degree with a classification of 2:1 or above
  • Have excellent IT skills – especially SQL and Excel. Intermediate VBA and Power BI skills are desirable. Python and Alteryx a nice-to-have
  • Display excellent analytical skills
  • Able to address groups of actuaries on technical processes in everyday terms
  • Problem solving and data visualisation skills
  • Demonstrate a curiosity about and some knowledge of the London General Insurance Market
